Is it okay to keep the ashes at home?
Yes. People in Taiwan, Japan, Germany and Mexico keep ashes at home. If you later want to bury or scatter them, rules differ by place.
A real example
A graphic designer in Mexico City keeps her Chihuahua's ashes in an urn on an altar in the corner of her living room, with his photo, next to a photo of her late father.
